This bottle fragment was just uncovered in an area we suspect was a rubbish dump behind the men's dorm. The glass looks hand blown and we suspect it's a whiskey bottle. Someone was breaking the rules..... #artifactoftheday #ohioarchaeology #historicalarchaeology
WCPO Cincinnati ran a story this weekend on the Parker Academy project!
A small key was found in JJ55. It looks like it could be for a small chest or cabinet. What do you think?
Lab work continues as Sage cleans and catalogs both our exciting finds and our not-so-amazing finds....

Patrick uncovered a 0.38 caliber (?) rim fire shell casing in unit JJ54. Any idea what this might have been used for?
Clams or freshwater mussels from the Ohio River were found in unit JJ54, 20 centimeters below the surface. These were likely used as food by the boys and men occupying the men's dorm at the Academy. We have also found some clams that were used to make buttons.
This is the other side of that same blue glass fragment.
A fragment from a blue glass vase or perfume bottle was found this week by Patrick and Jeremy.

Lucky for us, our work won't solely center on the excavations and #historicalarchaeology . We have permission to study boxes and boxes of archival material on the Parker family and the Academy. We cannot wait to learn about the Parkers' commitment to #racialintegratededucation , their connections to other #abolitionists and gleam hints about their participation with the #undergroundrailroad . #archivalresearch #socialjustice #19thcentury #ohiohistory #ohioarchaeology
