My trip to #Portland marked the first time I ever attempted to #hike in #zerodrop #minimalist #shoes . It was the most varied and challenging terrain I've tried in minimalist shoes yet. It was a success, though my ankles felt more fatigued by the end of the hike. I took the next day and a half off from my #lemsprimal2 and wore regular shoes to give my body a chance to recover. Wiggle your toes if you love walking barefoot? 👣👣 . I usually walk the beach in the morning but today I chose the grassy path. The ground was wet and muddy and felt wonderful between my toes. I walked over tree roots and fallen palm fronds, Waking up my feet with the different textures. I didn't even notice all the city noise while I was walking. . As a kid I spent all my non-school hours barefoot, but as an adult I somehow found myself in the shoes all the time. . Since becoming more of a barefoot woman about 10 years ago I've been amazed at how responsive my feet have become. When walking over roots or stones my feet sense the change and retract automatically. I rarely trip or stub my toe, which I used to do regularly. . Not even three months ago I would totally avoid climbing because of my abdominal separation and safely stay on the ground, being afraid of getting re-injured. But I realised the core is not only the abdominal strength, not even the strength of your torso as a whole. The strength of your feet is part of the core strength too. Or at least it can be, if you restore the ability of your feet to participate in movement. More joints in the body are able to articulate less strain there is on each of them. My injury made me realise that there were so many parts of my body that weren't moving and needed to be reconnected with the brain, so many places that needed to be strengthened. Yes, there is still a hole in my belly, but everything around has already got so much stronger. After spending the week wearing almost nothing OR nothing on my feet, my heart soared reading this in the Sunday Seattle Times. @nutritiousmovement's book Whole Body Barefoot gets mentioned in the third paragraph. And I have run two miles down this mountain (to make a ferry reservation) in my #lunasandals - I felt great the next day! But it took me a while to get to that point. And I continue to work on foot strength and mobilization because I live in a world of flat-and-level. It's another example of how your environment shapes you, and a reminder it's not just what you walk on, but what you walk in. Monkey toe morning! I've always been a fan of being barefoot. When I was living in Spain (wow, that was 10 years ago!) I horrified the Spaniards and not just the little old ladies. Most people I encountered believed that if I wasn't always wearing shoes I was going to get sick. I got sick for plenty of other reasons - namely all the drinking and lack of sleep (I was 25, what can I say) - but being barefoot wasn't part of that equation. Walking around barefoot most of my life has helped to maintain the mobility in my feet. I'm standing on two rather narrow rocks in this picture and my feet are doing what they're supposed to be doing - they're forming to the platform I'm standing on, and there's no pain involved. How do your feet move? Do you let them out into the wild without protection? Or are they always snugly wrapped up in shoes? Have you been taught any negative beliefs about being barefoot?

Beach movement challenge No.3: inspect your footsteps in the sand. Are your feet turning out as you walk? I know it doesn't feel like that, but sometimes our proprioception is a bit off. Sand is a great feedback tool to practise pointing your feet forward when you walk. Also, are the footsteps right in front of each other or do they show that there is a distance between your feet when walking? A lot of women, especially, tend to have a very narrow stance. Walking this way over time rotates the thigh bones inwards which can create all sorts of problems from knee osteoarthritis to pelvic floor disorders. Aiming towards the hip width distance between your feet when you walk you allow the bones of your legs to fully support your weight and the thigh bones to gradually rotate back to neutral. Can you walk with your feet as wide as your hips and pointing straight ahead? I couldn't resist playing this super fun movement game today! It was cool to feel my body learning new skill each time I dropped a book and tried again. This take was about the 8th time through - there was noticeably less dropping each time. I still have a way to go before it gets smooooth though! I also discovered some really intense blind spots - moments where I literally couldn't get my body to move the way I needed it to. I knew in my mind that I had to move a certain way so that a book wouldn't fall but my body just couldn't process it. This felt seriously strange!! Plus, this was a perfect way to put some of my movement books by @nutritiousmovement to a movement use :) Whole Body Barefoot has never been so #wholebody and Don't Just Sit There was taken literally 😊Thanks so much to @ashmrowe and @chandlerthemover for the inspiration - my nervous system is humming now too!
Midday texture treat for my feet 𖠘 grateful for the work I've put in to transform my feet (and body) from confined, weak and limited to free, strong and capable! . Enjoying the feeling of hard, irregular rocks, sticks and roots may seem like a joke for many of us who have spent a majority of our lives in highly cushioned, constricting or rigid footwear - but this is all perspective! Our feet (and bodies) adapt to what we do and do not do with them. Start small. Begin by walking barefoot on soft grass or sands. Allow your foot to deform to the subtle differences in shape and texture. Pay attention to how you land : are you falling onto your heel, sending a shock up to your knee and hip, or are you landing on your forefoot, so that you spring forward as you push off to take your next step? . We each have our own histories and are all beginning from different places. Your feet are a sensory organ, allowing you to feel the surface you are walking on and reflexively stabilise the body. Did you know that strength and mobility of your forefoot has a lot to do with your core strength, pelvic health and health of your knees? One of the greatest revelations I had at my RES certification week last month was the importance of forefoot mobility and control in every movement we do and how they work together with the deep hip rotators and the glutes to organically stabilise the body as you move. I've been playing a lot these days with walking on narrow and textured surfaces challenging my forefoot strength. It's also interesting to experiment with steep, narrow surfaces where you need to press through the forefoot to prevent the foot from sliding. And it's fun too! Rainy morning stroll around the neighborhood with my girls in between downpours. The only one not still in her PJs is the baby 😄. In addition to the varied terrain lawn walking vs. sidewalk walking provides, I also enjoy walking across our neighbor's decorative rocks. I get a little balance practice and my feet and ankles get some variety - win, win!

I enjoyed educating and teaching a Functional Feet Workshop in a beautiful venue this morning. Sadly no pics as I was too busy doing what I was there to do! The oldest person in my workshop was 81 years young and thriving. She was an inspiration to the rest of us. Willing to work for her health and is investing in her future movement. As an aside my artistic daughter brought home some henna last night and decorated my foot. Joint distortion gives you input about your environment for the purpose of eliciting a response from your body. "Are you walking with mama tonight?" "Yeah! Mama! Jase! [Pause] And baby! Milk!" . I don't know how far we walked tonight to try out a new park near our house. Maybe 1.5 mi? Maybe 2? Hard to gauge with toddler pace, but he walked quite a bit of it. Lately he's been wanting to be carried more than usual, so to break the habit a little I brought a ball and threw it ahead to him to run after. He loved it. Sometimes it seems like toddlers and dogs are really similar. 😂 When we got to the park he found a huge stick that he melted down about when I said it was too big to carry with him. 😂 . Also I haven't done much barefoot this year yet so this walk was all barefoot, even on the woodchips at the park! It felt pretty good actually!

Going for a wild swim in the river Teign seemed like the perfect way to be connected with nature on this day of the summer solstice ☀️. The water was refreshingly cool but @harryduns and I braced ourselves and waded in after only a little bit of initial squealing. I look forward to returning here later in the year to watch the salmon leap - here's to more beautiful memories made this summer.

While that may be good for wheelchairs, smoothing over the entire surface robs us on the moves between the moves. I'm talking about those 33 joints in each foot, plus lateral movement (versus linear). Especially in shoes that allow you to feel the lumps and bumps beneath your feet. # Each one of those movements sends a signal to your brain that helps increase balance and proprioception. Instead, we get repetitive stress syndrome, loss of muscle strength for stability, and more wear and tear on our joints. So this happened today. Jase learned to climb on prego's back while I was squatting and picking organic strawberries with friends. He actually held on well, which made it easy (hence surprised funky Katy face)... until he didn't, and decided it was great fun to try barrelrolling off my back. No worries, I'm basically a ninja. 😂 Needless to say he was more entertainment than help. 😂 . But if that's not stacking my life, I don't know what is. √Friends √Mama time √Sunshine and fresh air √Movement for both of us (and baby haha) √Learning where we get our food √Gathering our own food
Do you drive a standard (aka stick shift car)? I thought it was a good idea to buy one back in 1991 😜 but when I get stuck in traffic, my left foot suffers! 😩 I don't drive in the city much, but last night we had to haul a bulky contra bass tuba to our gig at #mirabellaretirementliving . Took one hour (!!) to drive 3 miles!!! I hate Seattle traffic. 🙄 # The next morning, my foot was letting me know about all that clutch holding! But after a few rounds of #calfstretch (adding in some toe spreading and lumbricals stretching) plus walking on a bumpy patio surface, treating my sole to some stretching over a #yogatuneup ball (left in its tote for texture!), and walking barefoot in the grass (aka earthing), all feels better now. # So grateful for all these moves I learned from @nutritiousmovement and my fellow Restorative Exercise Specialists! Thanks, y'all! # PS - the concert was a lotta fun! And I loved knowing that our director's father, who is 101 years old (!!!!), will still get up and dance the two step when he hears #washingtonpostmarch !
