I've got a cumulative final coming up in a few weeks. Time to get serious about reviewing! 🤓 I'm not sure how I'll fit it all in though. I'm hoping that doing a little review every night will do the trick, but there's just so much to remember! 📚📚📚
"I started to shift my thinking more towards trying to express to whomever would read my personal statement why I was passionate about medicine and wanted to become a physician. I found this much easier to talk about and was able to share my heart on the paper." - Carly Alexis, @doctorsoftomorrow, fourth year med student
How to blow through your Trader Joe's budget midway through the month: 1) buy Kombucha in all the flavors 2)that's it 😳
Always got my eye on the next goal. I'm not giving up on myself. It's been hard this past week but I have to keep going. The time will pass anyway, so I might as well give it all I've got.
New levels bring new devils. Stay unapologetically committed to your goals and let go of anyone who poisons your spirit! 👊 Sometimes the diet we need to be on is a spiritual and emotional one. Be cautious with what you feed your mind and soul. #HydrocephalusAwareness #RockingBlueForPauly Today is Hydrocephalus Awareness Day, and a friend of mine has a personal attachment to this condition. ▪️Hydrocephalus is the buildup of CSF in the ventricles deep within the brain. This excess fluid increases the size of the ventricles and puts extreme pressure on the brain. ▪️As a result, it poses risk to both cognitive and physical development in children. ▪️It's estimated to affect 1-2 of every 1000 babies born in the U.S. ▪️Surgically inserting a shunt will help divert the flow of excess cerebral spinal fluid, to another area of the body where it can be absorbed as part of the normal circulatory process. However, as with every surgical procedure there are associated risk which includes overdraining/underdraining of CSF via the shunt. Help raise awareness today by using the hashtag #HydrocephalusAwareness #RockingBlueForPauly #LifeOfAMedStudent #Medicine #TheMoreYouKnow
Just found out the biggest PHYSICIAN-ROCKSTAR is going to be our graduation keynote speaker! His word is like doctrine among physician trainees worldwide. Y'all I am freaking out right now over this crazy good fortune! You don't even know!!! 😆 ________ For my non-medicine friends: Dr. Atul Gawande began writing for The New Yorker in 1998, publishing commentaries on the life of a general surgery resident, and has since become one of the world’s most well-known and respected physician-writers. He has written four New York Times bestsellers: Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto, and his most recent, Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. ________ So basically, I want his writing CAREER!!! I never thought any institutional ceremony could inspire the high I felt the day I graduated from Brown. Until today.
Happy Monday Friends - One of the podcasts I listened to this weekend talked about the power of "I am" statements - basically the idea is that we can change our attitude, our mood, and our path in life based off what we tell our selves and how we finish an "I am" statement. My statements for this week are: I am strong. I am smart. I am loved, and I am going to have a great week. What are your "I am" statements for this week? Let me know below ❤️
It's Monday and everyone needs a little laugh.

Exam number two is coming up tomorrow morning! From my experience the best thing to do before a test is get a good night's sleep, so I'm doing some last minute review and then heading to bed early. 💤🌜I hope you all had a great weekend! 😄

Starting my Sunday slooooowly. It's important to take time for self care as you need it. It's amazing how often I have to keep reminding myself that it's not the way you get to your goal, but that you do indeed get there. It might be "easier" for others but that's okay- you never know what other people are struggling through. We are all strong and resilient and we will all reach our goals eventually. 👩🏽⚕️
It's the night before one of the most dense tests we've had (Haematology, Immunology, Infectious diseases) and I'd rather be reminiscing about my magical 2 weeks in Italy than interpret blood tests. 😢📚☕💭💭✨✨ .. .. #Italy #travelling #pizza #pasta #summer #Europe #travel #medicine #study #lifeofamedstudent #motivation #coffee #books #med #premed #doctorsintraining #futuredoctor #deskspace #studygram #university #college #surgery #studentlife #exams #inspiration #motivationalquotes #premed #premedinspo #studyblr #studyspo #studygram #diaries

Psych rotation has been eye-opening. There's so much stigma around mental health and people casually using terms like "bipolar" or "borderline". I think even physicians use these terms too liberally. But I've learned that everyone is on a spectrum and some people have learned the skills to handle their emotions and some have not. That's why self care is important - we gotta make those positive connections with our neurons. It's a skill like all other skills that needs practice.
While I was taking this picture, my dad was thinking of all the ways to get the coconuts 🙈
Spending the day experiencing a OSU game day 🙌🏼❤️ No books, no computer, and no studying involved. I hope you're having a great Saturday. O H!
It's a sunday and I'm currently studying on Psychosocial Trajectory of Illnesses. It's an interesting lecture, actually. It deals with how a physician should react when a patient and his/her family goes through these stages. As a future physician, I really hope that I could be of comfort to my patients and their family. I hope that if a time comes that I couldn't treat/cure their disease, at least improve their quality of life is the least that I can do. Prelim exams are almost ending. Last two exams on Monday, then Medicine week and then back to busy school days.
"When Dorothy Parker was asked if she loved writing, she replied, 'No. But I love having written.'" When all this is said and done, and someone asks me, "did you love studying for your boards?" I'll say not always (because sometimes, in rare fleeting moments I do love it), but I will love having done it. Because that will put me one step (and a pretty big step if you ask me) closer to fulfilling my dream of being a physician. So I keep grinding and hustling for my dreams.
All set up for a productive day of studying!🤞I'm testing out a mind mapping app to organize the high yield material for my exam. If it works out, I might incorporate digital mind mapping into my regular study routine. I'll let you know how it goes! 😄📚🌧️☕ Do any of you use mind mapping as a part of your study strategy?
All things bright and beautiful 😊
Another sunset pic from last weekend. What can I say? I'm kind of a sunset fanatic. 🌅 😄 Right now I'm wishing that I could head to the cabin again, instead of spending the weekend studying for my test. I guess it will be worth it as long as I pass! 🤞😆📚

What my Friday night looks like 😅📚📝 But, luckily, not the entire weekend, because no exam Monday! (we do have a quiz Monday and Tuesday though 😳) We started genetics today, so I'm trying to get a head start before the quiz! What does your Friday night/weekend look like?
These past few wks have been rough, not sure how to explain but it's almost like I lost my spark. I have been slow, my daily routines non existent, my todo lists incomplete, and it all pilled up into a haunting overwhelming guilt. ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧ Then hospital day arrived and I felt the power of medicine, but this time, on the caregiver side. I saw so many different cases, my first one was a sickle cell patient, a young gentleman, recovering from one of his numerous sickle cell crisis. He greeted me with a full smile, and so happily answered all my questions during the interview, his energy was contagious and I was able to witness the perfect example of how you can find happiness through your own attitude, regardless of the circumstances. ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧ Before rounding with the attending, I had 4 more patients to interview, practice my PE skills and later write a soap note for. It was a full day, but without noticing I was onto the last patient. I knocked, introduced myself and got to know a lovely older lady who had a "dizzy spell" the night before. After really digging through, I found out she was non compliant with her meds. So as trained, I elicited her perspective of why: she told me these meds were new, she didn't really know much about them and consequently kept forgetting it. Boy was I glad I had just read up on her condition, I carefully explained what her untreated disorder could develop into and followed up with my personal ways to help her remember taking them, then I broke down the purpose of each medication, she jotted some notes on the pill bottles and kept addressing me as "doc". It felt so official, so natural, so right! ✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧✧ As I rode home, I just didn't feel the same anymore, at some unknown point of the day something clicked, and just like that I got my spark back, hell I got my whole fire back!! What a humbling, gratifying and addicting feeling. The best reminder of why I spend hours and hours studying!

Late night study snack: Milo cereal and milk. 3 days till my Haematology/immunology/infectious diseases module exam (yes, I know, they've jam packed such a dense module into 41 lectures and 6 labs). Currently in full on night-owl mode. Good news: this is the 2nd-to-last lectures-based Pre-clinical exam before the end of 3rd year!!!! I made some Anki cards for histology today. It's super easy with the Apple Pencil to just grab images from the lecture slides and put them into a card. I love it! I just have to be careful not to make too many cards though or it gets pretty overwhelming...😊
